Death by Distraction

“Casting down imaginations, every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” -2 Corinthians 10:5
Focus: “A state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding.i” The thirst for greater, and the hunger for more, automatically ignites focus. Depending on the individual, focus either builds or destroys. The direction of the focus determines its effect.
We live in a world where social media is more entertaining than television. The images you see, and the words you hear can all have some affect on you. It is easy to become desensitized. Laughing all day at funny videos is fun and seeing what is going on in the lives of others’ is stimulating. But if hours spent on social media is a part of your daily habit with no constraints it can unconsciously become your “daily bread”. “Bread of Deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel” (Proverbs 20: 17). “It’s not a coincidence that the term distracted once referred not just to a loss or dilution of attention but also to confusion, mental imbalance and even madness.”iii
When Peter walked on God’s word, which translated to walking on water, he only began to sink when invisible external things like wind distracted him. This is how we also become distracted. In times when we confidently know we are exceeding our past capacity, we somehow allow external invisible things to create doubt in our minds and thwart our actions. Do you know how to recognize destruction in its infant form?
You are more than just skin and bones; you have a mind and a soul. You have the power to create an intense focus and be very selective with the things you give attention. “ Who you are affects how you focus, what you focus on affects who you are” iii You are a spirit and you have an active mind that can serve you. No matter what happens externally you have a strength that lives deep inside you. “..Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4) It is your responsibility to become familiar with that strength and furthermore to fervently believe in it.
The ability to focus on the truth (God’s Word) is powerful; it creates an inner strength that can weather the storms of life. As you move forward, remember that you have the ultimate power to cancel distraction. So much time has been wasted and so much has been destroyed due to distractions. Living in this era with distraction at the touch of our fingertips, it is imperative that we are vigilant and focused on God's Word. There is so much power inside of us that God wants to unlock, but we must give Him free access to our hearts and our minds. “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). The greatest thing for you to discover is yourself and the power that works in you.
